There is something special about watching celebrity relationships. It’s like seeing all of the romance and drama of your favorite movies and TV shows transformed into a real-life fairy tale starring the people you love.
Unfortunately, not all of these fairy tales get to have a “happily ever after.” In fact, celebrity breakups are sometimes much messier than you’d expect.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West recently filed for divorce after a year of their relationship slowly falling apart. But what made everything so brutal is that they ended up airing much of their dirty laundry for the world to see.
We found out that Kanye tried to get Kim to abort their first child. And we found out that Kanye suffers from bipolar disorder. Oh, and along the way, Kanye compared Kim’s mother to Kim Jong-un. And he tried to get back on Kim’s good side by bringing her father back to life as a hologram who told her that she married “the most…genius man in the whole world.”
All of these moments were dissected by the public, and everything culminated in an equally-public separation and divorce.

Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris
For Taylor Swift, whirlwind romances and abrupt breakups are to be expected. But even so, her breakup with Calvin Harris quickly became the stuff of toxic relationship legend.
At first, photos of Swift and Harris made them look like the happiest couple in the world. But a year later, Swift was snogging Tom Hiddleston. Believe it or not, this wasn’t the final nail in the coffin of their relationship!
Swift revealed that she had secretly written the lyrics to “This Is What You Came For,” the hit song Harris sang with Rihanna. As Billboard reports, Harris reacted by tweeting “Hurtful to me at this point that she and her team would go so far out of their way to try to make ME look bad at this stage though.” He also wrote, “I figure if you’re happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do.”
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp
While all of these breakups are brutal, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s divorce was insane. It quickly became the breakup heard round the world!
As part of their divorce filing, Heard accused Depp of abusing her. Depp denied this and she continued to make these claims. Things came to a head when The Sun called Depp a “wife beater” and he sued the publication for libel.
Depp actually lost the case, with the judge declaring that 12 of the 14 alleged instances of abuse were true, making “wife beater” an accurate label. In addition to the public shame of all this, movie studios began dropping Depp from roles (most notably, he was removed from future Fantastic Beasts movies).

Katy Perry and Russell Brand
The divorce between Katy Perry and Russell Brand is one of the older incidents on this list. And in its own way, it may be one of the very worst.
The two were only married 14 months before Brand decided to end things with a text message (no, really). He stopped talking to her after this, and Perry received the devastating text right before she had to go onstage and perform.
Later, Perry opened up about Brand being intimidated by her success and trying to control her during their relationship. And we can only imagine Perry is happy to have this relationship in her rearview mirror.
Angelina Jolie and Bradd Pitt
When Brad Pitt dropped Jennifer Aniston and married Angelina Jolie, it seemed like these stars were living in a soap opera. But when Pitt and Jolie divorced, the soap opera quickly became a courtroom drama.
The two have six children together, and this resulted in a nasty and prolonged custody battle. While things are settled now, it took over two years of arguments and drama (both in the courtroom and outside of it) to resolve things.
On top of that, Jolie recently filed alleged proof that Pitt committed domestic violence against her during their marriage.
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
The relationship between Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher always seemed unlikely. But they were married for eight long years. And it wasn’t until the end of that marriage and beyond that we would find out how screwed up they were.
The divorce was largely fueled by tabloid pictures of Kutcher that seemingly showed him cheating on Demi Moore with another woman. And Moore would later write a tell-all book called Inside Out that dished more about her relationship with Kutcher.
As InTouch Weekly reports, Moore told the world about the threesomes Kutcher pressured her into. And she confirmed that Kutcher cheated on her in their own home with a 21-year-old while Moore was filming a movie!
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
When it comes to divorce, kids make everything more complicated. And that’s something that Ben Affleck had to learn the hard way!
He and Jennifer Garner were married for many years and had three kids together. But that wasn’t enough to keep Ben Affleck from allegedly cheating on Garner with the family nanny back in 2015.
This kicked off years of messy divorce proceedings. No wonder Ben Affleck looks so sad in all those memes!

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
When Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson got together, the hearts of Twilight fans were full. After all, their favorite onscreen romance was now happening in the real world!

Sandra Bullock is most definitely in the running for the title of “America’s sweetheart.” And that’s what made her divorce and fallout from Jesse James so heartbreaking.
