Barack Obama’s 8 years as president were often without major scandals. To this day, fans of the former president like to joke about faux scandals such as that time he wore a tan suit or mentioned his enjoyment of Dijon mustard.

It’s only in recent years we’ve learned about Obama and his family as people and not just as national icons. Sometimes, we learn a little too much for example, that Malia loves to party just a little too much.

Still, Obama’s daughters have inherited his ability to ward off scandals and bad press. Why is that? Simple: their relationship makes them nearly unstoppable.

Style Icons

While the Obamas were mostly free of scandals, they still knew how to send journalists into a tizzy. For example, Malia and Sasha blew everyone away with their fashion sense over the years.

When the family visited Cuba (the first time a president had done so in 90 years), Malia and Sasha basically stole the spotlight from their famous parents. That’s because their keen fashion sense set major trends among young people while wowing everybody else.

If we only had two words to describe their style, it would be this: “effortlessly cool.”

Working For the Summer

As the daughters of a rich and famous family, you might expect Malia and Sasha to be completely pampered. However, they’ve spent a lot of time building skills and establishing their own legacy instead of trading on the family name. And that all started with their summer jobs.

For example, Sasha actually worked at a Martha’s Vineyard seafood restaurant back in 2016. And she did a little bit of everything, from food prep to cleaning tables and working the takeout window.

Malia’s summer job brought her into the orbit of Hollywood and various celebrities. She was an intern in 2015 for the HBO show Girls, and in 2017 served as an intern for the Harvey Weinstein company. Along the way, she got to rub shoulders with Halley Berry instead of selling seafood.

Ultimately, both girls’ experiences show they are ready to go out and make an impact on the world.

Time for Romance

Dating Malia or Sasha seems like something out of a sitcom. Not only do you have to impress their parents (some of the most powerful people in the world), but you have to spend every date with a third wheel: the Secret Service.

Nonetheless, the young ladies still found time for romance. Malia began dating Rory Farquharso and photos of their dates set the internet on fire. Sasha did the same when a picture of her kissing Matt Metzler at Lollapalooza went viral.

We can only imagine their love lives have gotten a bit easier since leaving the White House.

Impressing During a State Dinner

It’s easy enough for Barack and Michelle to brag about their daughters’ poise and social skills. However, we got to see them work their magic at a State Dinner honoring Canada back in 2016.

The dinner gave them a chance to impress world leaders, including Justin Trudeau. According to Entertainment Tonight, he told them, “I admire you very much, both of you, for your extraordinary strength and grace.”

Perhaps the greatest moment, though, was captured on camera. We can see Sasha Obama absolutely gushing over Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, all while Malia flashes a sarcastic thumbs up to her sister.

It’s easy to laugh, but we can only imagine meeting Ryan Reynolds would have that effect on anyone!

Very Different Personalities

Like many sisters, Malia and Sasha Obama seem to have very different personalities. When they lived with their parents, Malia was considered the more studious one while Sasha was the sporty and sassy one. In fact, the New York Daily News reports that “Sassy” is the family nickname for Sasha.

However, Michelle Obama dropped an intriguing hint about the girls’ personalities. While visiting The Late Show in 2015, she said, “ I’m not gonna say which one is which, but we have one who generally stays [even-keeled], and then we have one we call our Grumpy Cat. Our salty biscuit … I’m not saying. They could be watching. But they know who they are.”

They never confirmed who the “Grumpy Cat” is. But if Sasha is the sassy class clown, it sounds like Malia must be the “salty biscuit” Michelle was speaking of!

Hardcore Music Lovers

There are times that Malia and Sasha remind us that they are real people with real passions. And one of those passions is most definitely live music!

Malia made real headlines when she attended Lollapalooza in 2016. She twerked, smoked what might have been pot, and generally stole the show.

While she avoided the negative headlines, Sasha also adores a good show. She jammed out to Rihanna at the Jay Z’s Made in America music festival. And in 2018, she got to make her fangirl dreams come true by going backstage and snapping selfies with Cardi B.

Every now and then, this love of music brings the whole family together. The girls and Michelle all checked out a Beyoncé concert in 2016 to commemorate both Malia’s high school graduation and Sasha’s 15th birthday.

To make things extra special, Beyoncé even sang “Happy Birthday” to Sasha!

Living With Strict Rules

Remember when we mentioned the girls getting summer jobs? As it turns out, even when they aren’t working, they have to deal with some strict “managers” at home.

When they lived with Barack and Michelle, the girls weren’t allowed to watch TV or use the computer unless it helped with their schoolwork. And when the girls got cellphones, they could only use them on weekends.

Their parents were similarly strict about social media. Back in 2013, Michelle told the New York Daily News that they kept the girls off Facebook to avoid potential scandals. Nonetheless, Sasha ended up later sneaking onto Snapchat, where she would eventually troll her dad in a hilarious way.
