Barack and Michelle’s oldest daughter Malia Obama is a great example of this. Now 21 and a Harvard student, Malia’s personal life fuels the tabloids. Farquharson and his family have been pretty tight-lipped about their overall wealth. But from what we can tell, it certainly looks like Rory is quite wealthy.
First, he was raised in a home worth $2.27 million dollars. And his family could afford to send him to a boarding school that costs over $14,000 per term. Don’t forget to throw in his Harvard education (more on that in a minute), where tuition alone costs over $43,000 per year.
The Obamas are quite wealthy as well. And it looks like Rory will fit in quite nicely with them.
From Across the Pond
One of the biggest details about Farquharson is something you’ll notice as soon as he begins speaking. He’s not from around here: rather, he comes from England.
It’s possible that Malia fell for that sexy British accent. Heck, who wouldn’t? However, Rory’s academic background (including rugby, golf, and a “Head of School” award) indicates that he’s got both brawn and brains.
It certainly seems like Malia got herself a man who could do both!
Bad Influence?
Getting a British beau isn’t the only thing that has landed Malia in the headlines. Previously, she generated a ton of controversy with her use of marijuana.
Now, however, she has embraced a habit that is less controversial but far less healthy: smoking cigarettes. And paparazzi have discovered her smoking cigarettes while hanging out with Rory (who seems to be constantly smoking whenever they are together).
The casual smoking on a romantic outing makes some people think Rory has been a bad influence on Malia. Then again, she may just be following in the footsteps of her father Barack Obama, who was once a regular smoker before kicking the habit.
No Fan of Trump
The Obama family is tied to the political world. And with a father who was a Democrat president, Malia Obama is specifically linked to more liberal values.
That leads to the obvious question: is her boyfriend Rory more left-leaning? Or did a conservative British upbringing lead him to embrace more conservative American politics?
We don’t know a lot about his politics because of his social media seclusion (more on that below). Before he signed off on social media, though, he retweeted someone claiming Trump would continue losing popular appeal after the election.
The conclusion seems obvious: whatever his overall politics, Rory is no fan of Donald Trump.

The downfall of many celebrities is social media. Celebs ranging from J.K. Rowling to Gilbert Gottfried seemingly can’t help turning their fans against them with terrible online posts.
We should give some credit to Rory here: as soon as his relationship with Malia began, he got rid of all his social media accounts. Now, he’s no longer in any danger of making a bad joke or a drunken tweet and making either his family or Malia’s family look bad.
Royal Connection
When Americans focus on celebs dating Brits, there is usually a royal angle. For instance, just look at the ongoing media hoopla surrounding Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
It turns out Rory is no exception. While he is not royalty himself, he is Andrew Farquharson’s second cousin. Andrew assisted the Queen of England in a variety of roles before becoming part of her chivalric order, the Royal Victorian Order.
Maybe playing it cool around the rich and the famous simply runs in Rory’s family?
Honest About Himself
Given his wealth and privilege, it would be easy to criticize Rory Farquharson. After all, what could he have in common with regular folks? Here’s the surprising answer: he is brutally honest about himself.
Back in boarding school, Rory had a simple assignment: he had to write a letter to the 16-year-old version of himself. And the school was going to publish this letter for all to see.
Instead of playing it safe or bland, Rory lit into his old self. He called himself “lanky” and “over-confident” and claimed that he “failed miserably” to prove himself to his friends. He even told himself to get a haircut if he wanted to snag a girl.
