Meghan Markle ended up becoming one of the most divisive royals in history. Some critics see her as a jumped-up outsider who went from mild American celebrity to the heart of the Royal Family. Others see her as a breath of refreshing air as a young royal who isn’t afraid to speak her mind to the world.
When Meghan speaks, we listen. But some of the things she has to say go right past “refreshing” and into the category of “pretty damn shocking.”
Don’t believe it? We have rounded up the most shocking confessions Meghan Markle has ever made. Trust us: you won’t look at her the same way after this!
She spilled tea for a tell-all book
As you may already know, Meghan and Harry’s dramatic exit from royal responsibilities and from England was covered in the tell-all book Finding Freedom. While the book claims to be an impartial tell-all, it certainly seemed very favorable toward Meghan Markle. And some dismissed the book as little more than a puff piece.
And as it turns out, that is somewhat true. As Page Six reports, Markle provided information to the authors (though she claimed to not speak to them personally) about her and Harry’s personal life. Previously, reps for Meghan and Harry insisted they had no involvement with the book. We only know about her involvement now thanks to documentation she provided to the High Court as part of her lawsuit against The Mail.

She was sensitive to criticism from the Royal Family
As we noted before, Meghan Markle is a very divisive figure. Some cheer for her as she stands against the imposing Royal Family to chart her own path. Others see Meghan as someone who refuses to work well with others and who may simply be too sensitive to work alongside longtime royals.
It appears there may be some truth to the latter claim. As Cheat Sheet reports, Meghan later had this to say about the Royal Family and her father’s attacks against them. “I was especially sensitive to this as I had very recently married into the family and was eager to please them.”
It’s not exactly a bombshell statement on its own. But this quote paints an image of Meghan as someone hungry for royal approval and who may very well have blown mild royal criticisms out of proportion due to her admitted sensitivity.
She once considered suicide
Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey dropped one bombshell after another. And while it was easy to focus more on her explosive claims of racism within the Royal Family, Meghan admitted something even more shocking in that interview.
As The Wrap reports, Meghan admitted that she considered suicide. Regarding all of the tabloid rumors and speculation about her, Meghan said, “I just didn’t see a solution. I realized it was all happening just because I was breathing. I was really ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to admit it to Harry, especially because I knew he had suffered.”
“But I knew that if I didn’t say it — then I would do it,” she continued. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. That was clear and real and frightening and constant thought.”

She stopped watching ‘Suits’ after she left the show
Meghan Markle seems to have mixed feelings about her time starring on Suits. After all, this was the role that helped transform her into a major celebrity. But every rerun of the show is a keen reminder of how different her life was before she married into royalty.
In fact, she left the show shortly before marrying Prince Harry. Eventually, people were curious as to whether she kept up with the adventures of her on-screen colleagues. And the short answer is “no.” As People reports, Meghan was asked whether she still watched the show during the 2018 Coach Core awards, and she responded in the negative before changing the topic.
She still uses coupons
It’s not always easy to relate to rich and famous celebs. But Meghan has one habit that makes her easy to relate to: using coupons!
Meghan grew up clipping coupons alongside her mother, Doria Ragland. During an online New York Times-sponsored conference, as reported by The Sun, Meghan admitted that “I will never buy anything online without finding a promo code first. That is still in there, it is a modern version of the same thing.” Continuing, she said, “That was ingrained in me when I was young. Imagine what the world would be like if you ingrained other elements of financial understanding, especially to a young woman.”
Sure, Meghan and Harry might be millionaires, but Meghan is determined to hold onto each and every penny.

She felt ‘overwhelmed’ by her second child
Speaking of Meghan and Harry’s wealth, it’s easy to think that their wealth makes everything much easier for them. But there is one thing that money cannot prepare you for, and that is taking care of a newborn child!
Since leaving England, Meghan has seemingly grown more confident in her activism. And in 2021, she wrote an open letter to Congress about the need for paid family leave. Part of her letter summed things up perfectly: “In June, my husband and I welcomed our second child. Like any parent, we were overjoyed. Like many parents, we were overwhelmed.”
She went on to discuss the difficulty of caring for two children and that no parent should be forced to choose between spending these early days with a child or going to work. The message was clear: if it’s not easy for Meghan and Harry, then it’s not easy for anyone!
She once called herself a ‘fraud’
Remember when we said that Meghan wanted some distance between herself and her time on Suits? Well, there may be another (and much darker) reason for this.
As Express reports, an old video from 2004 surfaced where Meghan literally called herself a “fraud.” The reason? She lied to casting directors about being in a union in order to land a role in a CBS pilot called Century City. “And I got there, and they’re like – so you’re union,” she said. “And I’m like of course, I’m union I mean yeah absolutely. And then I wasn’t.”
“To this day those casting directors will never hire me,” Meghan said in 2004. “I was such a fraud.”
You could dismiss this and say it was a small lie regarding a forgotten TV pilot. Then again, it’s entirely possible that Meghan’s Hollywood career that helped her become a royal was built on a lie!

She was warned not to marry Prince Harry
From a distance, marrying Prince Harry seemed like a no-brainer for Meghan Markle. It’s fair to say that she lived the dream of countless young girls out there who wanted to grow up and marry a handsome prince.
However, she was actually warned against marriage. As Express reports, Meghan said, “When I first met my now-husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy, but my British friends said to me, ‘I’m sure he’s great, but you shouldn’t do it, because the British tabloids will destroy your life.’”
Continuing, she said, “I very naively — I’m American, we don’t have that there — [said], ‘What are you talking about?’” In retrospect, everyone was right: Meghan’s marriage to Harry seems happier and stronger than ever. But the two of them literally had to flee England to escape the very tabloids that nearly drove Meghan to suicide.
