The Unknown Truth Of Kamala Harris’s Husband Doug Emhoff

The line between politicians and celebrities has been getting blurrier every year. And each major political victory helps us learn more about people who are destined to become household names.

That’s the case with Kamala Harris’s husband Doug Emhoff. While a successful lawyer and businessman, he has been relatively unknown on the world stage. But with Joe Biden projected as America’s next president and Kamala Harris projected as the first female vice president, Doug will be making history in his own right.

Doug is now set to become America’s first “second gentleman.” But what’s his story all about? Here is the unknown truth of Kamala Harris’s husband Doug Emhoff.

Legal career

In order to understand Doug Emhoff, you must understand a bit about his background. He was born in Brooklyn and later attended the University of Southern California’s Gould School of Law. Upon graduation, he chose a very particular specialty: entertainment law.

While you may not have heard of Doug before now, he has worked on some very famous cases. The biggest one was the lawsuit involve Taco Bell’s $42 million legal battle regarding the one-time Taco Bell chihuahua mascot.

He didn’t stay in entertainment law forever, though. As a DLA partner, Doug now specializes in business, intellectual property, and real estate law.

How Doug Emhoff met Kamala Harris

Doug’s relationship with Kamala has endured for many years. But what many of her fans want to know is how these two met in the first place.

It was actually pretty straightforward: the two met on a blind date that was arranged by one of Kamala’s friends. And while blind dates can sometimes be disastrous, Kamala and Doug made an instant connection with one another.

Doug wasn’t shy about letting her know how much he liked her. As Kamala later shared on Instagram, “The morning after our first date, @DouglasEmhoff emailed me a list of his available dates for the next couple of months. He said, ‘I want to see if we can make this work.’”

Needless to say, things have worked out well for the couple ever since. He proposed less than a year later, and the two married in 2014.

Doug was married once before

When it comes to marriage, this is not Doug Emhoff’s first rodeo. In fact, he was married to film producer and CEO Kerstin Emhoff for 16 years.

The two married back in 1992 and divorced in 2008. And they ended up having two children: Cole and Ella, who are now (respectively) 26 and 21.

Possibly because of this long relationship, Doug did not rush back into a relationship. He wouldn’t start dating Kamala Harris until about five years after his divorce from his first wife.

Doug’s children have a special nickname for Kamala

It’s an open secret that divorces are often divisive and messy. And it can put a serious strain on the relationship between a father and his children.

Fortunately, this was not the case with Doug Emhoff. He remains on very good terms with both Cole and Ella. Even more interestingly, the children are on good terms with Kamala Harris!

Rather than refer to her as “stepmom,” the two have a nickname for Kamala. She revealed to Elle, her stepchildren call her “Momala.” It’s a cute mixture of “mom” and “Kamala” and indicates the closeness of their relationship.

And speaking of the children and Doug, Kamala wrote, “I can say one thing with certainty, my heart wouldn’t be whole, nor my life full, without them.”

Doug is Kamala’s biggest supporter

As we noted, Doug has had a very successful career as an entertainment lawyer and later as a partner. But he didn’t hesitate to put it all on hold to focus on his wife’s political ambitions.

Back in August, he took a leave of absence from his duties at the legal firm to help her with the presidential campaign. And his role is very active: he made campaign trail appearances with Kamala and helped spearhead several fundraising initiatives on her behalf.

On top of it all, Doug has made it clear that Kamala is his first priority. We can see this thanks to something absolutely adorable he told Marie Claire in October: “I’m not overly political. I’m overly her husband.”

Celebrating victory

Now that Kamala Harris is set to become America’s next vice president, it’s clear that Doug will remain her biggest fan and supporter.

On November 7, when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were projected the winners of the presidential election, Doug tweeted out a picture of him and Kamala hugging. And the picture had a very simple caption: “So proud of you.”

This post gained viral fame in the wake of global celebrations for Biden and Harris. And it may just be a glimpse of the next few years. As cute as Joe and Jill Biden are, it looks like Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff may take the crown as the world’s most adorable couple in politics.
