Meghan Markle has been a constant storm of controversy. From discussions over her unlikely marriage to Prince Harry to the fallout from “Megxit,” she is constantly under public scrutiny.
To the public, this is a tale of two Meghans. Some think she is an innocent romantic hounded by angry reporters. Others see an opportunistic social climber who threw the royal family into chaos.
Who could have seen this controversy coming? Prince Harry! Both before and after marrying Meghan, Harry ignored many warning signs that would make anyone worry about marriage to Meghan.
Here are all the warnings Prince Harry got about Meghan Markle before they got married.
Brotherly Worries
To outsiders, marriage to Meghan seemingly created a major rift between Prince Harry and his older brother Prince William. However, a new book called Royals at War by Dylan Howard claims that this rift started with a simple question from Prince William.
William reportedly asked Harry, “Is she the right one?” It’s a pretty innocent question. And one you’d expect a member of the royal family to ask when his brother started dating an American actress.
Nonetheless, this question was the beginning of Harry being overly defensive about his romance. Furthermore, William’s need to ask was the first big warning sign about marriage to Meghan.

Kate Chimes In
Meghan Markle and her sister-in-law Kate Middleton have had an intense feud, as we can see in their chilly public appearances. As with the rift between Harry and William, all of this started with an innocent question on Kate’s part.
According to Royals at War, Kate “gently reminded him [Harry] that he was dating someone with a completely different life, past, and career and it would take time, care and attention for them to integrate.”
Kate’s warnings were very genuine. And they served as an honest preview of the rest of their relationship.
However, Harry took this as criticism, ignoring the warnings. This may be what kicked off the ongoing feud between Meghan and Kate.
(Half) Sister Act
As you might imagine, the royal family doesn’t make too many openly-critical statements about Meghan. They pretty much define “stiff upper lip.”
However, Harry got some major warning signs from Meghan’s family members, including her half-sister Samantha Grant.
Samantha is older than Meghan, and they’re not especially close. She wasted no time, though, telling the press that Meghan is a “social climber.”
Of course, she may have simply had some sour grapes about not getting invited to the royal wedding.
While Samantha definitely has an axe to grind, her warnings to the press served as warnings to Prince Harry as well. Warnings he ignored….

Doubting Thomas Jr.
It’s tough to decide who the hottest mess in Meghan Markle’s family is. However, her half-brother Thomas Markle Jr. is very nearly the winner!
This brother is often in the public eye for all the wrong reasons, including drunk driving and allegedly holding a gun to his girlfriend’s head. Despite these antics and his estrangement from Meghan, Thomas Jr. offered Prince Harry some explicit warnings about Meghan in a handwritten letter shared with In Touch Weekly.
In his letter dated April 26, 2018, he warned Harry, “It’s not to [sic] late, Meghan Markle is obviously not the right woman for you.” Calling the marriage “the biggest mistake in royal wedding history,” he warned that Meghan is a “jaded, shallow, conceited woman that will make a joke of you and the royal family heritage.”
While Thomas Jr. is no prince himself, he provided yet another warning that Prince Harry ignored.
Daddy Drama
The biggest drama queen in Meghan’s family is more of a drama king. Her father, Thomas Markle, has been generating negative publicity for Meghan and her marriage for years now.
It all started with Thomas himself courting reporters. He staged a bunch of photos of himself ostensibly getting ready for his daughter’s wedding and made a bit of profit in the process.
When news of this leaked, it caused a major scandal for the royal family. Thomas ended up skipping the wedding citing health concerns.
Later, though, Meghan confirmed he refused to attend her wedding because he was publicly shamed by the Mail on Sunday for staging the photos.
It got even worse after the wedding when Thomas shared a personal letter he had received from Meghan with the press. After excerpts from it got printed, Meghan and Harry took the tabloids to court.
As warning signs go, it doesn’t get much worse than daddy dearest. However, Harry ignored all of this in the name of love.
Astonishing Behavior
Remember Kate’s warning that Meghan may not quickly fit in with royal life? According to royal expert and author Lady Colin Campbell, that’s exactly what happened!
Campbell claims the rift between Meghan and the royal family happened four days after her wedding, at a dinner party for Prince Charles’ 70th birthday at Buckingham Palace. There, she did something that absolutely “astonished” guests.
In fact, Campbell won’t say exactly what it was, because she is saving it for her upcoming book entitled Meghan and Harry: The Real Story.
“I can’t repeat it exactly, it’s in the book, but what I can say is, something happened at the very first garden party at Buckingham Palace… we were all absolutely gobsmacked and astonished, we all thought this doesn’t bode well,” she teased.
Skeptical readers may think it’s just gossip, but it shows Meghan’s inability to fit in among royals.
Megxit: Rifts and Revelations
Beyond the family drama and the royal drama, the biggest warning sign Harry got about Meghan was from the British tabloids. Meghan got constantly hounded by rumors and speculations from the press.
Eventually, this culminated in a message from the couple to several tabloid papers: “It is gravely concerning that an influential slice of the media, over many years, has sought to insulate themselves from taking accountability for what they say or print – even when they know it to be distorted, false, or invasive beyond reason.”
It’s an open secret that this animosity from the press helped lead to “Megxit.” As unfair as this media focus was, however, it served as a warning that Meghan would never truly fit in within the confines of royal life.
