Sure, Donald only had one child (Tiffany) with his ex-wife Marla Maples. But most assumed at the time that the two might have had more children if it hadn’t been for their untimely divorce. Now, Donald Trump has been married to Melania since 2005, and the two show no signs of splitting up. It didn’t take Donald Trump and Melania very long to have their son, Barron. The two got hitched in 2005 and their son was born in 2006, about 14 months later. It surprised some that the two newlyweds rushed into parenthood so quickly. As for Donald, he was surprised, too, but not necessarily for the reason you might think.
The former president disclosed to People that “I was surprised by the speed of it.” In short, he thought it would take longer for him and Melania to conceive their first child and was surprised (though not unpleasantly) at how quickly his new wife got pregnant. Still, they never tried to have any more children after this, and many over the years have assumed that Melania was hesitant to do so because her husband is, admittedly, pretty terrible at playing parent to a young child.

Supporters of Donald Trump may think that calling the man a bad father is some sort of exaggeration or insult. Weirdly enough, though, we know this about the former president based on his own words. In an interview with Larry King back in 2005 (the same year that he married Melania and that she got pregnant), Trump was shockingly frank about what he would and wouldn’t be doing when it came to young Barron Trump and any other children they might have together.
“I’m not going to be doing the diapers. I’m not going to be making the food. I may never even see the kids,” he said. On that last point, he eventually relented, and Melania claimed that her husband would get up early to get the infant out of his crib so they could have some bonding time. Unfortunately, it turns out that he wasn’t bluffing about the rest of his parenthood predictions!

Aside from getting up early to talk with young Barron, what did Donald Trump really do as a parent? That’s a good question, honestly. For example, Melania confirmed to Parenting that her husband never helped change their child’s diapers or helped tuck the kid in at night.
Melania insisted that this arrangement wasn’t as ominous as it sounds…after all, they had plenty of hired help to deal with Barron as needed. And at one point, Donald himself sounded enthusiastic about having more kids. They never did, though, for a surprisingly simple reason.

So, we’re down to the big question: why did Donald and Melania Trump never have more children than just Barron? Especially because Donald himself wanted more? In an interview with Palm Beach Daily News, she revealed that the two had to hire a nanny because “we still need to have a life.”
There you have it, folks. They might be some of the richest people in the world, but Donald and Melania Trump limited themselves to only one child for the same reason that many of us do: because they were seeking a proper balance between being great parents and having lives of their own. Of course, whether or not Donald Trump’s endless political ambitions have kept them from enjoying their life as a couple may be a different story altogether!
