As First Lady, Jill was mostly remembered for being a kind and gentle soul. A kind of motherly figure, which is exactly what you’d expect from a lifelong educator.

However, Jill Biden has one quality about her that almost nobody could guess: a bit of snarkiness…at least, when someone annoys you. And one of the few people who seemed to consistently get under Jill’s skin is Melania Trump, who was FLOTUS directly before her. And Jill responded by casting some serious shade, though it was occasionally so subtle that it was easy to miss.

Jill Biden and Melania Trump: two very different First Ladies

Before we can dive into the ways that Jill Biden cast shade at Melania Trump, it’s important to recognize the differences between these two First Ladies. As mentioned before, Jill Biden mostly came across as a warm blanket of support while in the White House, both for her husband and for the nation at large. She isn’t really remembered for any bold initiatives or major media appearances, preferring instead to blend into the background of her husband’s political ambitions.

For better or for worse, Melania Trump was quite the opposite. She took the kinds of bold strides that her husband is famous for, but her approach to FLOTUS sometimes backfired. For example, she spearheaded an anti-bullying campaign (“Be Best”) that was generally mocked because her husband never stopped bullying people, both online and on the debate stage. She also didn’t move into the White House for five months after Donald Trump was sworn in, and before he was even elected the first time, she was called out for seemingly stealing parts of a Michelle Obama speech when she spoke at the Republican National Convention.

In other words, Jill Biden rarely rocked the boat. Melania, however, rocked it all the time!

Is Melania excluded from an exclusive sisterhood?

You might have noticed by now that current and former United States presidents have a surprising amount of collegiality among each other regardless of their political affiliation. For example, Donald Trump arguably launched his political career by making baseless attacks on Barack Obama, including the infamous claim that Obama wasn’t actually an American citizen. Nonetheless, when the two were seated together at Jimmy Carter’s funeral, they were very cordial, with Obama cracking up in laughter at something Donald Trump told him.

For the most part, current and former First Ladies have a similar bond. However, Melania Trump seems like she never fit into the same club that Jill Biden and Michelle Obama fit into. For example, she had a famously weird moment where she presented Michelle with a present after Trump’s inauguration, a slight breach of protocol that left the other woman confused about what to do with her gift. And, as we’ll get into later, she declined an opportunity to have tea with Jill Biden (which the fellow FLOTUS eventually told the whole world about).

Subtly calling out Melania Trump’s weirdest fashion choice

Now, just how has Jill Biden cast major shade on Melania Trump over the years? When Jill attended the G7 Summit in 2021, she wore a jacket that read “Love.” As reported by the Independent, she said she wore this jacket because ‘we’re bringing love from America. This is a global conference and we’re trying to bring unity across the globe and I think that’s important right now.”

That all sounds proper and good, of course. But we couldn’t help but notice that she seemed to be calling out the bizarre Melania Trump moment where she was visiting migrant children who were missing their families and she chose to wear a green jacket with “I really don’t care, do u?” Many at the time thought Melania was telling the world exactly how she felt about those kids. And as for Jill, maybe she was telling the world exactly how she felt about Melania!

Jill Biden’s thoughts on Melania Trump’s poor taste

Once Jill Biden became First Lady, she made redecorating the White House a top priority. Many First Ladies have done this, so it didn’t really seem like a big deal at the time. But one source close to the woman revealed to Ok! Magazine that these changes were made specifically because Melania Trump had bad taste.

“Jill hated the changes Melania had made to the second and third floors especially,” the source said. “She thought Melania had awful taste and made the rooms look tacky.” And while Jill Biden is usually polite and friendly, the source made it clear she enjoyed undoing Melania Trump’s hard work. “Stripping the rooms of Melania’s choice of drapes and furniture was one of the first things Jill did as first lady. It gave her a lot of pleasure.”

Spilling the tea about tea

Did you know some of the biggest tea about Jill Biden and Melania Trump involves actual tea? One longstanding political tradition has the current and incoming First Ladies meet for tea and a walk around the White House. But in 2020, Melania didn’t have tea with Jill Biden, and in 2024, she ignored the tradition altogether.

There are many reasons she might have done so, of course. Heck, maybe Melania just doesn’t like tea! But according to the New York Post, Melania scoffed at Jill’s offer of support after the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life. “I do question, however, whether Jill’s concern was genuine.” From the outside looking in, it looks like there’s no love lost between these two powerful women, and their relationship may forever be formal and very, very chilly.
