Recently, Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt. Regardless of where you stand politically, this was a terrifying moment, one that illustrated just how divisive politics in this country have truly become.
Of course, Trump himself has always been divisive, and he once seemingly predicted that someone would shoot him. Furthermore, he made a rather shocking prediction regarding how bis wife Melania would react to such an assassination attempt. Just what did he predict, and how has Melania reacted now that someone took a shot at her husband?

The recent attempt on Donald Trump’s life
Recently, Donald Trump was conducting one of his political rallies in Butler, Pennsylvania. These rallies had become a very common feature of his political campaigns, and nobody had any reason to suspect that this one would be any different.
That’s why it was so particularly shocking when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks tried to assassinate former President Trump by shooting him. Trump was shot in the ear by the now-deceased young man, and the images of him looking defiant after nearly getting killed have swept the internet like wildfire.
There’s a certain irony there: the man who tried to keep Trump from running for president again may have helped him ultimately win the election, with images of his defiant strength being contrasted against Joe Biden’s inability to string words together at the recent presidential debate.

Trump brought up another political shooting
Donald Trump would be the first to tell you that he has always been a divisive figure. It is perhaps because of this quality that he seemingly predicted that somebody might try to shoot him. This is something that he first touched on during a fundraiser back in 2019.
As reported by Politico, Trump was in rare form at this event, winning the crowd over with his usual mixture of jokes and extreme opinions. At one point, he brought up how Steve Scalise of the House of Representatives was shot in 2017 while preparing for a charity baseball game. He noted how the man’s wife was bawling about the attack after it happened.
However, he darkly predicted that Melania would have a different reaction altogether.
Donald Trump’s dark prediction of how Melania would react to his shooting
Politico reports that Donald Trump had some particularly eyebrow-raising comments about getting shot at his 2019 fundraiser. He said that when he went to meet Steve Scalise in the hospital, his wife Jennifer “cried her eyes out when I met her at the hospital that fateful day.” In his own weird way, Trump seemed to be moved by her outsized show of emotional support for her husband.
To underscore how special Jennifer Scalise was, Trump told the crowd “I mean not many wives would react that way to tragedy.” With his usual comic timing, he continued: “I know mine wouldn’t.”

Melania’s actual response remains unknown
Half a decade ago, Donald Trump bluntly predicted that his own wife wouldn’t shed any tears if he were to get shot. As usual, his words are open to interpretation. Some think he was being completely earnest and this reveals how casual and uncaring his marriage really is. Others think that Trump was just engaging in some of his trademark out-of-pocket humor.
Of course, that leads to the natural question: how did Melania react to her husband getting shot in the ear? Sadly, we have no idea how Melania might have acted behind closed doors and whether she, too, cried her eyes out. What we do know is what she said to the world after the fact, and what she didn’t say might be enough to prove Trump correct.
Reading between the lines of Melania’s unity statement
Soon after the attack, Melania Trump took to Twitter to release a letter about the incident. The letter read “When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and [our son] Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change.” After that, she thanked the Secret Service agents for keeping her husband safe and expressed condolences for the families of the shooter’s other victims.
She also mentioned that, after this attack, it was particularly clear that “ “Love, compassion, kindness and empathy are necessities.” While all of this sounds good on paper, many critics note that she only mentioned herself and Barron rather than any of Trump’s other children. Whether this was an unintentional omission or a deliberate diss remains unknown.
Also unknown is whether Melania will seriously get involved with her husband’s campaign. She has so far kept her distance, and she seemingly ditched the Republican National Convention after promising to be there, only showing up for the final night. From the outside looking in, it certainly seems like the last thing Melania wants is to move her family back into the White House.
