The Surprising Reason Prince William Was ‘Furious’ When the Public Learned About His Relationship With Kate Middleton

These days, Prince William and Kate Middleton are basically “relationship goals” to couples all around the world. They continue to have great chemistry and share a quirky sense of subdued humor. And their relationship has weathered some very stormy weather, including everything from lingering rumors about William’s infidelity to Kate’s shocking cancer diagnosis.

However, back in the day, one aspect of their relationship had William downright angry, and that was when news of it went public. However, the source of his anger wasn’t Kate herself…in fact, what made the future King so mad was sweet enough that it might have kept them together over the years.

What made William so angry, and what were the relationship events that led up to this sudden anger? Keep reading to find out!

William and Kate first met in college, and William was instantly smitten

This tale goes all the way back to when Prince William was a college student. He attended St. Andres University, where he received a top-notch education. It’s fortunate that he managed to still focus on his studies because he faced a major distraction back then. Namely, the presence of fellow student Kate Middleton!

The prince was reportedly getting a bit bored of school, but all that changed when he became smitten with the shy Kate. The two of them began having breakfast together along with William’s friends, and they might have stayed just friends if Kate hadn’t wowed William by wearing a partially see-through dress at a fashion show. This prompted William to make a move, but Kate demurred because she was dating someone else at the time.

It wouldn’t be that long, though, before the future husband and wife ended up moving in together.

William was almost forbidden from moving in with Kate

On paper, the idea of Prince William and Kate Middleton living together before they got married sounds a bit scandalous. However, they moved in as friends, not lovers. Moreover, they moved in with two mutual friends, living in a happy quartet while attending their studies at the university.

Interestingly, William was nearly forbidden from moving in with Kate, but it wasn’t the Royal Family trying to hold him back. Instead, it was their landlady, Charlotte Smith. She had previously established a “no boys” policy after previous tenants had broken her furniture and windows and generally made themselves a menace.

It was Smith’s husband who convinced her to take on a male tenant…all he had to do was remind her that this was the future King of England not some random hooligan on the street. Fortunately, Kate and William ended up being dream tenants, although William would soon have bigger problems to deal with than a paranoid landlady.

The sweet reason Prince William was annoyed his relationship went public

You can probably guess the next part: living together caused Prince William and Kate Middleton to fall in love. Behind closed doors, the future King was apparently fond of making dinner and other romantic gestures. However, he wanted to keep their romance hidden from the world, and he was reportedly “furious” when a paparazzi took a photo of them on a ski lift, leading tabloids around the world to publish that the prince had found a girlfriend.

The reason for William’s anger was actually a bit sweet. He wasn’t ashamed of her or their relationship…he just knew, from a lifetime of being a famous figure, how the press treats anyone connected to royalty. Once news of their relationship went public, he was worried about the safety of both Kate and her family.

When William and Kate surprisingly called it quits

News of their relationship going public in 2004 didn’t drive Prince William and Kate Middleton apart. And considering they survived being the focus of all those weird headlines, it looked like they were right on pace for their own “happily ever after.” However, in 2007, the two shockingly called it quits on their relationship altogether.

The two never disclosed what caused the split, leading to speculation of everything from Kate being annoyed they hadn’t already gotten married to William despairing that the spark in their relationship was gone. During the brief time they were split, William allegedly roamed London nightclubs in search of his next girlfriend. He eventually got back together with Kate, but only because she did the unthinkable and issued the future King of England an ultimatum.

They got back together thanks to Kate issuing an ultimatum

The reason that Prince William and Kate Middleton got back together is as simple as it is shocking. One of Kate’s friends dished about the whole thing to the Daily Mail, saying that “Kate had had enough, and words were exchanged.” The source claims that “Kate told William that he was making her look back…she has coped for years with girls flinging themselves at her boyfriend, and for a while, she found it humorous and even flattering.”

William’s alleged behavior (the aforementioned prowling nightclubs and looking for a new lady) prompted Kate to take action. “She gave him an ultimatum and told him that every time he behaved like that in public, he was cheapening her image as well as his own.” Kate, the source claims, “wasn’t prepared to be treated like a doormat” and ended up laying down the law with William.

It sounds like the ultimatum worked: these two lovebirds got back together. And they got married in 2011, had three beautiful children, and are poised to rule England together as King and Queen. Not too bad for a couple who started as roommates back in university!
