Meghan Markle is someone who has built an entire brand largely on her good looks. That’s not meant to be a snub…after all, she went from being a world-famous actor to being married to a prince. In her capacity as both celebrity and royal, looking good is a major asset, and nobody can deny that Meghan has utilized her own beauty to great effect. And in addition to her natural good looks and killer wardrobe, Meghan is famous for using makeup to take each look to the next level.
Nine times out of ten (heck, 99 times out of 100), Meghan’s makeup game is incredibly on point. Every now and then, though, she screws up in a way that makes us wonder if it’s her first day trying to wear blush or eyeliner. And after you see these major makeup malfunctions, you may never be able to look at her the same way again.

The makeup transfer scandal
Prince Harry has always supported military veterans, and after their wedding, this cause became equally important to Meghan Markle. This is why, in 2019, they both visited Poppy Factory’s Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey in London. While there, Meghan visited assorted plots, helped lay down a Cross of Remembrance, and met with assorted veterans, including D-day vet William Allen.
She hugged and kissed the veteran, but the sweet moment was marred, quite literally, by a makeup fail. After the hug, it was clear that her makeup had left some powder on Allen’s jacket. The soldier took this in stride and joked “I’m never washing that!” However, Meghan’s critics were quick to point out that she obviously put on too much makeup and had likely left similarly embarrassing marks on countless other veterans that day, creating one embarrassing moment after another.

Putting the “L” back in “lipstick”
These days, Meghan Markle almost exclusively rocks nude lip shades…they look great on her skin and generally match the understated elegance vibe that the Royal Family prefers. In 2013, however, she got a bit wild and sported some pink lips when she attended the Tory Burch show during New York Fashion Week. It was a very bold choice…unfortunately, the choice didn’t really pay off.
First off, Markle’s pink lipstick arguably clashed with her dark fashion, making it look like she couldn’t decide whether she wanted to dress mysteriously dark or vibrantly bright. Plus, it didn’t really match her skin tone; frankly, she looks much better in red lips than pink ones any day of the week. Fortunately for Meghan, she got her lipstick game figured out well before she married Prince Harry half a decade later.
Too much blush, too little time
These days, Meghan Markle usually applies just the right amount of blush to give her cheeks a pop of life without making her look cartoonishly red. Long before she met Harry, though, she unveiled a true blush disaster when she attended a National Kidney Foundation fundraiser in 2008. At this event, she wore so much color that her face looked permanently flushed. Forget a healthy glow…she spent the entire night looking like she had run up a flight of stairs only moments before.
It didn’t help the future royal that the rest of her look was an unmitigated disaster. Her eyeshadow was too dark, her concealer was caked on too much. Finally, her jacket was too small, and her jeans (which sadly became a staple of her fashion) clashed with everything else. Considering how good she normally looked before and after this event, we can’t help but wonder what went wrong!

Critical eyeliner failure
You’ve probably noticed that many of Meghan Markle’s worst makeup malfunctions occurred before she was engaged to Prince Harry. Apparently, marrying into the world’s most famous family is enough to make you check the mirror a few extra times before going out looking like a clown! However, when she and Harry made their first visit to Wales after getting engaged, another makeup error was on full display for the world to see.
She and Harry ended up meeting some very enthusiastic schoolchildren outside Cardiff Castle, but those kids ended up getting a quick lesson in what not to do, makeup-wise. She had smudged eyeliner and paired that with thin eyebrows and very visible creases under her eyes. The overall effect was that she looked more like a harried school marm than someone about to call Queen Elizabeth her grandmother!
Going overboard on makeup
With makeup malfunctions, poor Meghan Markle sometimes can’t catch a break. Some of her biggest blunders occurred when she didn’t have enough of one thing or another on her face. However, her biggest blunder of all was caused by the opposite: wearing way too much makeup!
In 2020, she attended London’s Endeavour Fund Awards, and her look was immediately askew thanks to copper eyeshadow that didn’t mesh with her bronzer. Her eyebrows were a bit too thick, and the black eyeliner really emphasized that fact. Finally, her red-orange lipstick made her entire aesthetic look too busy and chaotic. She was supposed to be a put-together Duchess, but she came off like a paint-by-numbers coloring book page filled in by a deranged toddler!
