Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have solidified their reputation as the most rebellious royals, having stepped down from their responsibilities to the Royal Family and moving to America. They did this partially because of all the negative tabloid headlines surrounding Meghan. Unfortunately, turning their backs on their famous family earned the ire of even more critics all around the world.
The one redeeming thing about this particular couple is that they did everything in the name of love. Harry presented himself as a knight in shining armor, one dead set on reading his wife and giving her a better life. Because of that, you might expect these two to make the most of Valentine’s Day, the one day that celebrates sweet, passionate love.
However, you’d be wrong: Harry and Meghan have had some of the weirdest Valentine’s Days in celebrity history. Don’t believe it? Keep reading to learn all the royal tea about this quirky couple!
Meghan cashes in on Valentine’s Day

Over the years, many have criticized Valentine’s Day for being an overly commercial holiday. After all, nobody really needs a designated day to make their partner feel special; you can do that whenever you want! Because of this, many cynics think Valentine’s Day is simply a way that the rich and powerful exploit people into spending money that they otherwise wouldn’t.
Unfortunately, you can add Meghan Markle to the list of people trying to cash in on Valentine’s Day. This year, she used the holiday to advertise “a sweet surprise,” which ended up being a couple of fruit spreads and four chocolate bars. That may not sound like much, but the Duchess of Sussex sold this for a whopping $92, which is practically a steal compared to the $185 deluxe set that threw in a candle, some tea, and some flower sprinkles. Thanks to the high cost and the fact that she was trying to sell them as a special Valentine’s gift, the internet collectively dragged Meghan Markle for turning a holiday designed to celebrate lovers into nothing more than a cash grab.

Harry ditches Meghan for Valentine’s Day

When you get right down to it, there aren’t too many rules for Valentine’s Day. Some couples go out for an elaborate dinner and dancing, while others spend a quiet night at home. Whatever they end up doing, the goal is for the couple to spend time with each other and help the relationship grow stronger.
Unfortunately, Harry didn’t get that memo. 2019 would have been his first Valentine’s Day as a married man, but the prince was too busy focusing on royal duties to focus on his wife. He went to address the troops stationed in Norway, leaving Meghan at home, pregnant with their first child!
This happened again in 2025; Harry no longer had to worry about royal duties, but he spent time in Vancouver helping to run the Invictus Games. Meghan stayed home with their two children and posted a black and white photo of her and Harry kissing to Instagram. Unfortunately, this backfired, with many critics claiming this was a staged photo intended to dispel rumors that this royal couple was about to get a divorce.
Smiling through the pain

As you can tell, many of Harry and Meghan’s weirder Valentine’s Days are caused by the couple either ignoring each other or shilling using the holiday to sell themselves as a brand. However, their 2020 V-Day wasn’t weird because of anything they did on the big day. Instead, it was weird because they had just shared unthinkable news with the world: that they were about to step down from their royal duties!
It didn’t take the tabloids long to label this event “Megxit” as a way of blaming everything on Meghan Markle. When TMZ caught the couple in Canada on Valentine’s Day, they reported that the couple was all smiles. This actually increased resentment among critics who felt they were making a mockery of the Royal Family. That resentment never really went away, and these two remain the most rebellious royals the modern world has ever known.

Valentine’s drama surrounding Meghan’s second baby

Perhaps trying to avoid the controversies of previous years, Harry and Meghan used Valentine’s Day 2021 to announce that she was pregnant with their second child. On paper, this was a great way to control the narrative, and the public was more likely to be sympathetic towards Meghan after she tragically miscarried during the previous summer.
Unfortunately, this announcement was not enough to stave off controversy. They paired the announcement with an official portrait, causing critics on Instagram to declare that this performative move meant that the royal couple was trying too hard. Speaking of performance, critics hated when Meghan subsequently named her child Lilibet in what appeared to be a blatant attempt to suck up to Queen Elizabeth.
