Right now, all eyes are on Kamala Harris, and for good reason. After Joe Biden unexpectedly backed out of this year’s presidential election, he endorsed his vice president to run for his old job. She has mostly sat on the sidelines for the last four years, but the media is now fixated on Kamala Harris as she prepares to square off against Donald Trump as Biden once did.
Many of Kamala’s biggest fans are hoping she says and does the right things on camera to win enough votes and ultimately beat Trump. As for us, we can’t help but wonder if she’s going to have any more wardrobe malfunctions during this campaign. As vice president, she made a few fashion mistakes that lost her some much-needed supporters, and it’s important not to make any such unforced errors on the campaign trail.
What kind of previous fashion faux pas are we talking about? Keep reading to find out!
How the life of Kamala Harris changed overnight
Previously, Kamala Harris didn’t have to worry too much about making fashion mistakes. Sure, the ones she made lost some supporters (more on those mistakes very soon), but she was always second fiddle to Joe Biden. As long as he got the votes in 2024 like he did in 2020, then what Kamala did or did not wear while campaigning wouldn’t really be a big deal.
Then something unprecedented happened. During this year’s first debate with Donald Trump, Biden was all over the place, sounding confused and very, very old. Even lifelong Democrats began whispering about whether the president had dementia and if he needed to be replaced at the Democratic National Convention. Stunning the world, Biden voluntarily stepped down and endorsed Kamala to run for president, taking his place in the fight against Trump.

Kamala is known for having a good fashion sense
Now, before we fully dive into the biggest fashion mistakes Kamala Harris has made as vice president, it’s worth giving the woman her due. Unlike many celebrities we could name and even other politicians, Kamala isn’t known for making bad fashion choices. In fact, she has the exact opposite reputation!
Over the years, many have praised Kamala Harris for dressing like a whip-sharp modern businesswoman. Her everyday attire isn’t just fit for the White House…it’s the same kind of thing she could wear (and in some cases, has worn) as a high-powered lawyer.
With that being said, she’s made a few weird fashion mistakes that have cost her some political capital. Without further ado, let’s take a look at exactly what those mistakes are!
Rocking skinny jeans on the cover of Vogue
Vogue is a magazine with a decades-long history of featuring First Ladies. In February 2021, Kamala Harris did more than simply appear in the magazine…she graced its very cover. This was how many people discovered who their new FLOTUS was, and Kamala kept it chill with a black jacket, blouse, skinny jeans, and her trusty low-top Converse shoes.
It’s a very comfortable fit, and Kamala honestly looked great while wearing it. However, many online critics thought that her choice of shoes was a little too casual and didn’t really match with the dignified office of the First Lady. It’s possible Kamala agreed…she was reportedly angry at not getting to pick the image used for the cover, and the digital version of this issue had her wearing a more conservative blue pantsuit on the cover.

Purple and pricey
Sometimes, it seems like Kamala Harris can’t catch a break when it comes to fashion. For example, when she was sworn into office, she wore a purple dress and coat designed by Christopher John Rogers. She looked great in it, which is quite the feat…after all, not everybody can pull off purple.
In this case, though, not everyone can afford the outfit, either. It soon became public knowledge that Kamala’s trendy outfit cost $3,995. That sparked outrage among many who think rich politicians waste money while taxpayers starve. This outfit seemed particularly insensitive considering that Biden and Harris had run against Trump by claiming that unlike him, they’d do more to help out the working man.
Ruffling feathers with Dolce & Gabbana
Even if you’re not a very stylish person, you know that Dolce & Gabbana is one of the most recognizable fashion brands in the world. Because of this, Kamala Harris likely thought there wouldn’t be any problem wearing a gray wool pantsuit from this brand when swearing in America’s first female treasury secretary, Janet Yellen.
However, in 2018, the public discovered some old text messages from Dolce & Gabanna co-founder Stefano Gabbana that were racially insensitive. He claimed he was hacked, but these alleged texts were racially insensitive and lost the brand many fans when they went viral.
A few years later, Kamala lost some of her own fans by wearing Dolce & Gabanna. No matter their reputation as fashion icons, her association with this brand made Kamala look that much worse when the public was still just getting to know her.
