Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron’s relationship started as student and teacher

Here’s something you may not realize: Brigitte Macron is almost 25 years older than Emmanuel Macron. If you get the ick from major age gaps in relationships, the fact that she’s almost a quarter of a century older than her husband may weird you out. Things get that much weirder, though, when you discover that their relationship started when she was his high school teacher!

She taught at Le Providence in Amiens and met her future husband when she was 39 and he was only 15. Brigitte was married at the time, but her relationship with Emmanuel developed when she began meeting him every Friday to help him work on school scripts. It got weird enough for Emmanuel’s parents that they moved him away from Brigitte to a boarding school in Paris.

However, Emmanuel remained smitten and kept trying to pursue a romantic relationship after he began his college education. Brigitte divorced her husband in 2006 and married Emmanuel in 2007. By all accounts, they seem very happy together, but many critics still think that Brigitte effectively groomed a minor whom she had power over, forever sullying the rest of their relationship.

We’re talking, of course, about Brigitte’s children from her first marriage (Laurence, Sébastien, and Tiphaine), who had serious doubts about her relationships with Emmanuel.

According to Telegrafi, Tiphaine later opened up about how bad things got when their small town began spreading rumors that a boy from Laurence’s class was dating Brigitte, a married woman. “There was everything, attacks, rumors, punishments,” she said. “At that time, there were no such things as social networks, but we lived in a small provincial town, everything was known.”

Brigitte knew how bad things were, later admitting to Elle that “I know that I have hurt my children.” Still, she ultimately felt that her relationship with Emmanuel was worth it despite the difficulties it caused her children.

Rumors of Emmanuel Macron having an affair

Another major concerns in Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron’s marriage is that there were strong rumors of the French president sleeping with other women. The most persistent rumor was that his marriage to Brigitte was a cover that allowed him to secretly date Radio France bigwig Mathieu Gallet. This particular rumor gained so much traction that the president later addressed it at a political rally.

As reported by SCMP, he pointed out that “[Brigitte] shares my whole life from morning till night and she wonders on a basic level how I could physically do anything!” He even went on to joke that it must have been some wayward hologram of his that people are talking about. While there’s nothing wrong with making light of a potential scandal, many of Macron’s critics felt that the strength of his protest meant that he really did have something to hide.

Historically, Brigitte Macron has been frank about her marriage to Emmanuel appearing strange to others. In an interview with RTL Radio, she openly declared, “We are not a model couple. Of course, we are not the ideal couple.” Despite this admission, few of Brigitte’s critics thought that she literally abused her husband…at least, until recently!

Recently, Emmanuel and Brigitte visited Vietnam via a private jet. Cameras caught a moment where she apparently shoved or slapped her husband, leaving him looking temporarily shocked. The president quickly recovered, and (as reported by The Cut), he later explained, “My wife and I were squabbling, we were rather joking, and I was taken by surprise.” He went on to make fun of how a bit of “bickering and joking” somehow became “a sort of geoplanetary catastrophe.”

It’s possible, of course, that he is telling the truth. Nonetheless, many have begun speculating about how violent Brigitte might be when the cameras aren’t rolling!
