There is something unique about child celebrities. Audiences can basically watch these celebs grow up, both onscreen and offscreen. And some of them are virtually unrecognizable as time goes on.
Ariel Winter is a great example of this. The Modern Family star first appeared to us as a young, shy, nerdy character. But as time went on, we could see her developing into a confident and independent young woman who is also a powerful role model.
How did this transformation take place? Let’s take a closer look at Ariel Winter throughout the years!
Impressing the world
In 2009, we got our first glimpse of Ariel Winter on the hit TV show Modern Family. And on paper, it looked like her character would be a bit boring: a mild-mannered nerd that is hard to root for.
But Winter completely brought this role to life. She imbued wit and sassiness that quickly made her a fan favorite. Her character might still have been a dork, but Winter made her seem more “adorkable” to fans.

Fashion evolution
On her TV show, Winter’s look didn’t really change that much from year to year. But by looking at Winter as she attended awards shows and other major events, we can see a young woman going through her own fashion evolution.
At first, this look involved blending comfort and cool, like when she rocked this dazzling dress with a nice pair of old, comfy shoes. Soon, though, she was appearing at different red carpet events and rocking glamorous dresses that showed off her developing figure.
Experimental fashion
Offscreen, most of Winter’s killer looks came in the form of awesome dresses. But she also proved she isn’t afraid to change things up for a fashion makeover.
For example, this 2013 photo shows Winter absolutely killing it in simple slacks and an unassuming top. This was the complete opposite of her more elaborate looks, but she wore it with the grade and confidence of a queen.
Later, she’d start making changes to her hairstyle and even hair color. With all these changing fashions, there were times that even Winter’s biggest fans had trouble recognizing her.

Growing self-confidence
It can be intimidating to be a child star, especially on a long-running television show. These stars must deal with changes to their bodies, all while their look is being scrutinized week after week by dedicated fans.
And this was especially true of Winter. While she had been cast to play a nerdy character, she was clearly developing into a sexy and full-figured girl next door. And she began playing this hot new look up during her various public appearances.
Mostly, this took the form of dresses that showed off her skin and buxom body. While some people were scandalized at the sexy looks Winter kept serving up, her biggest fans saw that she was simply becoming more comfortable with her body.
Rocking all the hair colors
Many women experiment with different hair colors over time. And as Winter shows us, all it takes is a change of hair color to create an entirely new look.
When we were first introduced to Winter on Modern Family, she rocked some very dark hair. And she was obligated to keep that particular hair color for the show’s 11-year run.
That ended when the show ended, though. Winter celebrated by dying her hair red. And with her fiery and fierce personality, this hair color only seemed fitting!
After a few months of this, Winter dyed her hair platinum blonde. And she confirmed something we suspected all along: there is no hair color that she can’t make look great!

Taking control of her look
We have reviewed some of the powerful ways Winter has taken control of her appearance with clothing and hair color. But the biggest change she made involved what was under the clothing.
At 17 years old, the star opted to have breast reduction surgery. According to an interview with Glamour, this was a case of being careful what she wishes for. “I remember being in my sister’s wedding and being so flat and thinking, I just wish I would grow boobs!’ and then overnight I did.”
Good news, right? Not exactly. “But then they kept growing and growing and growing and it didn’t seem like they were going to stop,” she said. “I was 15 years old with [size] F [breasts]. “It’s like, ‘How do you navigate that?’”
But make no mistake: she didn’t get a reduction because she worried about what others thought of her. She did it to help with the pain and, most importantly, “I got it for myself.”
Impressive weight loss
A breast reduction wasn’t the only way Winter really took control of her body. She also did so by undergoing a major weight loss journey in 2019.
She laid all of this out in an Instagram story. As People reports, Winter wrote, “For years I had been on anti-depressants that caused me to gain weight that I couldn’t lose no matter what I did.”
Continuing, Winter wrote, “It was always frustrating for me because I wanted to be able to get fit and feel like the work I was doing was paying off, but it never felt that way. I had accepted it and moved on. I stayed on those medications for so long because the process is really long and difficult.”
Fortunately, changing her medication up helper her “drop all of the weight I couldn’t lose before by just giving me back a metabolism.” While she was mostly happy with the loss, she was also committed to getting a bit of weight and muscle back on her body. And, as she ruefully added, “Also want my butt back.”
