Meghan Markle has had an estranged relationship with her father for the past few years. Now, her father, Thomas Markle, has confirmed that he is working on a documentary that will focus on their family life and Meghan Markle’s younger years.
To hear Thomas Markle describe this project, the documentary is like a love letter to his family. He told The Sun, “It begins with my life, my family, my love of theatre and television and how I got there. Then my life with Meghan, growing up, her school days until she went off to college, and when her career began.”
However, there are hints that the movie may attack Meghan, or at least criticize some of her decisions. Thomas Markle went on to tell The Sun, “We had a good life together, up through her first marriage and her move to Canada. Then a new story begins. It’s kind of like ‘What happened to my baby girl?’”
The idea of Thomas Markle making a documentary isn’t that far afield. After all, he is a former television lighting director, and he participated in a Channel 5 documentary last year called Thomas Markle: My Story.
But it’s also easy to look at this new documentary as a kind of cash grab. Thomas Markle was previously busted for staging photos ahead of Meghan’s royal wedding to Prince Harry. And Thomas later sent portions of a letter from Meghan to The Daily Mail which they published, leading to Meghan and Harry taking the tabloid newspaper to court.
In Thomas’s mind, this is all part of his due. “The royals owe me, Harry owes me, Meghan owes me. What I’ve been through, I should be rewarded for,” he says in Thomas Markle: My Story.
So, to Thomas Markle, squeezing a bit more money out of his contentious relationship with his famous daughter and son-in-law may seem perfectly natural. And he may also feel obligated to keep up with his children: given that Meghan and Harry are working with Netflix to produce a series of documentaries, Thomas may see this as an opportunity to beat them to the punch.
Somehow, we are certain that Thomas Markle’s documentary will be less inspirational and uplifting than what Meghan and Harry are working on. But in terms of celebrity gossip, it may make for an entertaining experience!
