Princess Diana Was Obsessed With the Occult

If we’re being honest, there are some in our lives who wonder why we remain so fascinated with Princess Diana. Why, they wonder, are we still obsessed with someone who died decades ago?

There are plenty of reasons for our obsession, but one of the big ones is that we’re constantly learning new things about Diana. In fact, we recently learned that she had her own strange obsession with the occult and that “The People’s Princess” might as well have had a different nickname: the paranormal princess.

What was up with Diana’s obsession with the occult? Who were the mediums and spiritualists in her life, and were they the real deal or just charlatans? Finally, what’s the sad secret behind this spiritual fascination? Keep reading to find out!

Diana’s fascination with the occult

If you’re skeptical, you might think that Diana’s so-called obsession with the occult was something mild and unremarkable, as if she was just another person who took her horoscope too seriously. However, the princess took her obsession to the next level, throwing her considerable resources to a number of energy healers and psychic mediums.

For example, she regularly hired energy healer Simone Simmons to do things like cleanse her apartment of bad energy thanks to her marriage with Charles falling apart. She hired other experts to try a number of different treatments on her, including hypnotherapy, acupuncture, and so much more. And while we may never know the exact depths of Diana’s fascination, we do know exactly how that fascination got started.

The surprising way she got involved in the occult

Princess Diana may have been obsessed with the occult, but she didn’t have that obsession when she was younger. In fact, she didn’t become interested in this subject until after she married into the Royal Family. It all started when she got some surprising advice from Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson (better known to many as Fergie).

This was 1986, and Diana was in a perpetual state of depression thanks to her crumbling marriage to Charles. She was absolutely desperate for advice, so Andrew and Fergie recommended that she go see the astrologer Penny Thornton for advice. She enjoyed the experience so much that, at Fergie’s suggestion, Diana began seeing more spiritual advisors, including Sally Morgan, Rita Rogers, and Vasso Kortesis.

A shared sense of spirituality with Charles

As we touched on before, Diana wasn’t the kind of person who grew up visiting spiritualists for advice. However, she was still more predisposed to seeking out their help than most people are. That’s because Diana always considered herself a very spiritual person, so she was likelier to trust the advice of psychics and mediums when more traditional advisors couldn’t help with her depression.

In a dark bit of irony, the source of Diana’s depression also shared her spiritual fascination. When they first got together, a shared love of spirituality is one of the few things that Charles and Diana had in common. But the further they drifted apart, the more Diana began to rely on occult advisors.

Keeping her occult entanglements hidden

Thanks to the later testimony from others, we know that large chunks of Princess Diana’s busy schedule were taken up with seeing spiritual advisors. Nonetheless, most people are unaware of her occult obsession. The reason for this is simple: for the most part, Diana kept quiet and didn’t reveal her obsession to the public.

It’s possible that Diana kept quiet because she wasn’t entirely a believer…some who knew her during the height of the occult fascination have revealed that she went back and forth over whether she actually believed in this stuff or not. It’s equally possible, though, that she saw how much Fergie was mocked for her various new-age beliefs and decided to stay quiet to avoid generating mocking headlines around the world.

The tragedy behind the occult fascination

Chances are that you know a few people in your life who share the late Princess Diana’s fascination with all things occult. Heck, you might be one of them yourself! So you probably know that there are countless different reasons someone might become enamored of this topic. Many of those reasons are pretty harmless. However, the reason that Diana got into this subject in the first place is just profoundly sad.

It all goes back to Charles and how quickly their marriage fell apart. Charles was, of course, obsessed with Camilla, the woman he would later marry. This caused Diana to be in a very unhappy marriage that she would have done anything to fix. In this case, that meant paying wild amounts of money to anyone claiming they had the psychic powers to cleanse her and her home of negative energy.

In the end, Diana wanted the same thing that every depressed person dreams of. She wanted someone who could help her to be happy once again. That happiness never came due to the occult, though…instead, it came only when she finally divorced Charles and began leading her life on her own terms.
