That may not sound so crazy, but keep in mind how well we have gotten to know presidential spouses like Jill Biden, Melania Trump, and Michelle Obama. Nikki Haley’s meteoric political career

Before we dive into Michael Haley, we need to talk a bit about his famous spouse. In short, whether you love her or hate her, Nikki Haley has had the kind of meteoric career that almost any politician would kill to achieve.

It all started when Haley was elected as South Carolina State Representative in 2005. She served in that position for half a decade, but her career took an insane vertical leap when she was elected governor in 2011 in a historic election. She was a successful governor through 2018 and parlayed that success into a one-year appointment as the United States ambassador to the United Nations.

Most recently, Haley tried to secure the Republican nomination for president. She lost to Donald Trump, but given how successful her other political positions have proven, we wouldn’t be surprised to see her become president sometime in the next couple of elections!

Michael Haley’s work with Nikki’s parents

Now that we’ve put Nikki Haley’s wild career in context, let’s take a look at her husband. Michael Haley basically entered her life when the two of them were in college together. The two of them got married in 1996, and it didn’t take that long for the couple to pass the ultimate relationship test: working together along with her parents!

Back in 1976, Nikki Haley’s mother started a clothing business named Exotica International. Nikki previously worked there as a bookkeeper, and after getting married, she came back to the company and put Michael to work. Upon her return, she served as the CFO while Michael managed the menswear brand. Fortunately, Michael had a great working relationship with his in-laws, but that was a pretty recent development: because Nikki’s parents are Sikh Indians, they didn’t know what to think at first when Nikki decided to marry an American Methodist!

His military service and current deployment

Michael Haley could have simply led a comfortable life as a successful businessman. However, he has always felt a powerful sense of service towards his country. For that reason, Haley joined the National Guard in 2006. He rose to the rank of captain and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2013.

That wasn’t the end of his deployments, however. Just last year, he (now a major) was deployed to Africa. That means he has spent nearly two decades serving his country, but Michael doesn’t mind. As he told NBC News, “It is important to me to be able to give back.”

The sweet motivation for his time in the military

Obviously, Michael Haley loves his country, and he’s very proud to serve in the National Guard. However, that’s not the only reason he serves. And the second reason is one that is certain to melt your heart!

When discussing his military motivations with NBC News, he said “But in the end, I can’t help but to think giving one year along with my fellow soldiers, as many have done before me, to secure a life of freedom for my family is well worth all that comes with it.” As a “major” family guy, Michael doesn’t mind putting the extra work into keeping his family safe and secure.

Incidentally, military service is one of the reasons you don’t see or hear much about Michael Haley when Nikki is busy making headlines. As it turns out, his first overseas deployment happened when Nikki was South Carolina’s governor. His most recent deployment happened only four months after Nikki announced she was going to run for president. Long story short, that means that when headlines were most focused on Nikki’s political career, Michael was a world away, serving his country.

Recently, Nikki Haley lost her bid to run as the Republican candidate for president. In the meantime, though, Haley isn’t running for office and Michael should be back from his deployment in about three months.
