Whether you love him or hate him, everyone can agree that Donald Trump was one of the most controversial presidents in United States history. He constantly generated so many crazy controversies, in fact, that it can be hard for most to remember the ones that fell through the cracks.
For example, everyone remembers the leaked audio of Trump saying he could grab women by a certain part of their anatomy, but few people remember the crazy photo ops that arguably turned America into an international embarrassment. Ready to dive into the memory hole and remember just how weird things got? Keep reading to discover the most insane President Trump moments everyone has forgotten!
Actually saluting Kim Jong Un’s general
At first, Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had a very adversarial relationship. Trump (ever fond of nicknames) gave his rival the mocking moniker “Rocket Man,” referencing the constant missile tests North Korea is always conducting. Kim Jong Un, meanwhile, settled for publicly calling Trump a “dotard.” Eventually, they met at summits in Singapore and Vietnam, and Trump’s supporters initially hailed this as a rare diplomatic win for a hotheaded president.
However, things quickly went too far in 2018 when Trump was photographed saluting one of Kim Jong Un’s generals. We suspect Trump was just trying to be diplomatic, but the optics of this moment were completely awful. Here we had the leader of the United States going out of his way to salute the general of an enemy nation!

Hinting at a terrorist attack….in Sweden?
The president is always privy to information that most people in the world are unaware of. Therefore, when a president alludes to some major attack happening, people will take it at face value. This fact came to bite Donald Trump in 2017 when he attended a rally in Melbourne, Florida, and interrupted a rant about illegal immigrants to suggest Sweden had just experienced a terrorist attack.
“You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden,” Trump shouted. “Sweden, who would believe this? Sweden!” However, no such attack had taken place and everyone else was very confused. This included the Swedish embassy having to call the State Department to ask what Trump was even talking about!
Shoving his way into a photo opportunity
In May 2017, more people were interested in the annual NATO summit than usual for a simple reason: it was going to be Donald Trump’s first summit, and everyone was morbidly curious about what crazy things the contentious leader would do or say. Relatively speaking, Trump did well, and there were few negative headlines about what he had to say to national leaders.
Unfortunately, there were quite a few negative headlines about a strange moment where Trump let his actions do the talking. At one point, all of the leaders in attendance gathered together for the annual tradition of taking the official summit photo. When this happened, Trump visibly shoved Montenegro’s Prime Minister Dusko Markovic. It looked for all the world like Trump was shoving another national leader out of the way in order to get a better spot in the photo, effectively proving most of the worst assumptions regarding his vanity.

Casually ruining Christmas for children everywhere
Being president can have stressful moments, but some are very joyful. For example, on December 24, 2018, Donald Trump sat next to Melania and gave young Collman Lloyd a phone call. He was all set to wish her a Merry Christmas, and with cameras rolling, it seemed there was no way Trump could mess this up.
However, Trump wasted almost no time asking the seven-year-old girl “Are you still a believer in Santa? Because at seven, it’s marginal, right?” We don’t know what she said in response that made Trump chuckle, but parents around the country were horrified to hear the president effectively confirm Santa isn’t real on national television.
Fancy fast food dining
Many have argued that Donald Trump missed out on a great career in comedy when he decided to pursue real estate and, later, politics. Certainly, many of the things he has said over the years would be funny if they had come from anyone other than the president of the United States. In retrospect, though, one of the funniest things he did while in the White House was most likely never meant to be taken as a joke.
In order to celebrate the accomplishments of the Clemson Tigers who had recently won the college football championship, President Trump invited the team to dine with him at the White House in January 2019. Everyone was expecting a feast, but what they got was a selection of dishes from fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s. Arguably, the only thing more surreal than being served a mountain of fast food by the president is seeing his crazy grin as he poses in front of the food.
Perhaps sensing how bad this all looked, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders later claimed that this was the best they could do because a government shutdown had closed the White House kitchen, forcing Trump to pay for this fast food feast out of his own pocket. That’s all well and good, but couldn’t such a rich and influential man buy something a little more luxurious than McDonald’s?
