Coming to America
Melania Trump (originally born Melania Knauss) wasn’t born in the United States. Instead, she was a citizen of Slovenia who became a successful model. Those modeling gigs sometimes took her around the world, but she always knew there was one place she would need to go if she really wanted to make it big, and that’s America.
Way back in 1996, Melania moved to America. She hoped to supercharge her modeling career, so she didn’t move to just any random city. Instead, she moved to Manhattan, which is generally considered the heart of the action. There, she did find some of the career success she was looking for, but she also found something else: the love of her life.

Meeting Donald Trump
These days, there are entire generations of Donald Trump fans who don’t remember him as a real estate mogul who was wildly famous in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Back then, Trump was less interested in politics and hanging out in the White House and more interested in attending fun parties. Unsurprisingly, it was at one such party that he met the woman who would become his third wife, though the meeting didn’t go exactly as he had planned.
According to Today, when Melania first met Donald, she gently rebuffed him. “He wanted my number, but he was with a date, so of course I didn’t give it to him.” Instead, she changed things up by asking the real estate bigwig for his number. This was meant to be a test…if he gave her a business number, she wouldn’t ever call it because “I’m not doing business with you.’
However, Donald Trump surprised her by giving her all of his numbers, private and otherwise. This surprise move worked its magic, and less than a week later, Melania gave him a call.

After they began dating, the next few years had a few ups and downs for Donald Trump and Melania’s new relationship. For one thing, he had to finalize his divorce from Marla Maples. Also, he and Melania broke up for a brief time before getting back together.
For all that uncertainty, though, Donald Trump eventually became certain of one thing: he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Melania. So at the Met Gala in 2004, he proposed to her. And these two ended up living happily ever after, but not before they had a true wedding for the ages.

A wedding for the ages
If you know anything about Donald Trump, you know that he doesn’t like to do anything small. He wants only the best for himself, and that meant throwing Melania one of the glitziest weddings in American history. This began with a special dress for the bride: a $100,000 Christian Dior wedding gown.
The wedding reception was held at Mar-a-Lago, of course, and was especially beautiful thanks to the 10,000 flowers artfully displayed. And the chefs were offering guests caviar and Cristal. All in all, this was an amazing day, one that could only be eclipsed by something else: the birth of Melania’s son.
Melania Trump becomes a mother
For Melania Trump, March 20, 2006, is the most important day of her life. That’s when Barron Trump was born, and he was instantly the light of his mother’s life. Previously, Donald Trump made it clear that his wife would be doing the majority of the work when it came to raising Barron. As a consequence, she and her son developed a very tight bond, one that continues to this day.
During Donald Trump’s first presidential term, Melania actually avoided moving into the White House for several months. This is because she wanted to keep Barron in New York long enough for him to finish his semester. Ultimately, this was the perfect snapshot of Melania: while she went on to make for a very memorable FLOTUS, she never hesitated to put her family before herself.
