However, becoming a Biden meant that Hallie Biden had to deal with one tragic life event after another. Any many of those events haunt her to this day.
What are the most tragic events of Hallie Biden’s life, and how do they continue to haunt her long after the events have ended? Keep reading to find out!
Dealing with Beau Biden’s death

Hallie became a member of the Biden family when she married Beau. They had met when they were both just children, but they did not begin dating until the late ‘90s. From there, they had a real whirlwind romance: they got engaged in 2001 and married in 2002 before settling down and having kids. At the time, it looked like they were going to lead a long and happy life together.
Tragically, Beau Biden’s health began to deteriorate in 2010. That was when he had a stroke. Three years later, a doctor removed a brain mass, but this was not enough to keep him from dying from brain cancer in 2015. While everyone in the family was devastated, it was evident that Hallie Biden was completely shellshocked, unwilling or perhaps unable to speak at the service or issue any kind of statement regarding her husband’s tragic death.

A controversial relationship with Hunter Biden

Through her marriage to Beau, Hallie Biden got to know her husband’s brother, Hunter Biden. They got to know each other even better when Beau got sick because Hallie and Biden would both accompany him to his doctor’s appointments. Eventually, the two developed a bond so strong that something nearly unthinkable happened: after Beau died, Hallie and Hunter began dating.
On paper, Joe and Jill Biden supported this new relationship, telling Page Six that “We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness.” However, in Hunter Biden’s book Beautiful Things, he admitted that he actually asked Joe Biden to make that statement and that his dad did not initially approve of their relationship. This disapproval likely caused more drama for Hallie, who later admitted that her relationship with Hunter Biden had some severe ups and downs.
She got caught up in Hunter Biden’s legal drama

While Hallie Biden is not a household name, most people know who Hunter Biden is. As the son of Joe Biden, he was always destined to be a celebrity. However, he became a figure of extreme notoriety when it became public knowledge that he engaged in activities like drug abuse and having sex with prostitutes. Needless to say, he became a target of Donald Trump and other conservatives who wanted to use Hunter’s many scandals to shake the faith of those who previously voted for Joe Biden.
All of this came to a head during Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial. He was charged and ultimately convicted of three felonies regarding the illegal purchase of a firearm while he was addicted to crack cocaine. Hallie was at the heart of this trial because she found the gun in his car; she didn’t realize he had bought it and tried to get rid of it by simply tossing the weapon into a garbage can. She later testified that this was a poor decision but that she panicked because she worried Hunter might commit suicide and had only been searching his car because she was looking for drugs.
According to CNBC, she testified that “I didn’t want him to hurt himself or my kids to find it and hurt themselves… I was just so flustered from the whole thing. I realize it was a stupid idea now, but I was just panicking.” Honestly, the fact that genuine concern for her partner landed Hallie Biden in the middle of a federal trial that aired all her relationship’s dirty laundry is one of the saddest things we’ve ever heard!

Her honeymoon was ruined

Hallie and Hunter Biden’s relationship didn’t last. The two of them split up in 2019, and Hallie began dating John Hopkins Anning. The happy couple got married in 2024, but Hunter Biden’s legal drama ended up derailing what should have been the happiest time of the newlyweds’ lives.
That’s because Hallie had to testify at Hunter Biden’s trial only days after tying the knot with her new husband. Anning joked about this to NBC News, saying that “It’s not a great way to start the honeymoon” before confirming that all of this has been “very hard” on Hallie. Perhaps more than anything else, this incident illustrates that Hallie Biden just can’t escape the tragedies of the past, no matter how hard she tries to create a better future for herself.
