The first official trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie has arrived, and the internet has reacted with a resounding: “Run away fast!”
In some ways, a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie was inevitable. SEGA’s “blue blur” of a video game mascot has had a number of TV shows and comics over the years (of admittedly varying quality). Now, the makers of this film seem to be gambling that if the world is ready for a live-action Detective Pikachu, then it must be ready for a live-action Sonic.
However, most of this trailer seems designed to horrify instead of titillate. First, there’s Sonic’s design: gloves are gone, showing surprisingly creepy hands. And his mouth is full of inexplicably human teeth. Finally, the eyes are spaced so far apart that he could have remained a 2D sprite.
As many online users have noted, Sonic looks like the transformed monkey-kid from the original Jumanji movie. And if your modern CGI recreation of a beloved mascot looks like a horrifying effect from nearly 15 years ago, you know you’ve done something wrong.
The rest of the trailer is a resounding “meh.” The action (including an overwhelming missile attack and an underwhelming car chase) looks bland and uninspired. Perhaps this is why we get a seemingly wooden performance from James Marsden as Sonic’s human partner. Their few scenes together will leave you wishing this was a Sonic and Tails movie instead.
Arguably, the bright spot in the trailer is Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. To bring this character to life, Carrey busted out all the facial tics and weird voices that characterized his Ace Ventura glory days. While that seems like a comedic retread, his costume design is exciting, and the trailer promises we’ll eventually see how far the manic Carrey will push this role. The movie is set for release on November 8, 2019.
Until then, we’ll be staring at Sonic’s scary teeth and wondering why (just WHY) the trailer is set to “Gangster’s Paradise.” Watch for yourself below.
