On Monday, the National Rifle Association (NRA) announced that Fox News commentator and retired Marine Lt. Colonel Oliver North, 74, will become president of the NRA within the next few weeks. North is retiring from Fox News “effective immediately” in preparation for his new role.
North has in the past served on the NRA’s board of directors.
In a statement, the NRA’s executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre said, “This is the most exciting news for our members since Charlton Heston became President of our Association,” adding, “Oliver North is a legendary warrior for American freedom, a gifted communicator and skilled leader. In these times, I can think of no one better suited to serve as our President.”
