Facebook is back in the headlines following revelations that the social media giant was sharing the personal data of millions of users. An internal memo from Vice President Andrew “Boz” Bosworth was leaked to Buzzfeed, in which he argued that the social network needed to focus on its core mission of connecting people, even “if that growth came at the expense of human lives.”
“We connect people. Period. That’s why all the work we do in growth is justified. All the questionable contact importing practices. All the subtle language that helps people stay searchable by friends,” read the statement.
“All of the work we do to bring more communication in. The work we will likely have to do in China some day. All of it,” wrote Bosworth. “So we connect more people. That can be bad if they make it negative,” he continued. “Maybe it costs someone a life by exposing someone to bullies. Maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated on our tools.”
